Projects Not Quite Understood

I have been doing some inventory lately, and going through several bins and bags of projects and supplies.

Some projects are unfinished. Or finished, but not quite understood.

Like this piece I felted months ago.

At first it was just meant to be a practice sample. But now that I see it again, I kind of like it here on the black bookshelf.

If anything, every time I pass by it, it inspires me to felt more, so that is a good thing :)

Crocheted Bowl for a Sweet Pine Cone

I found this little treasure on a walk a few weeks ago, and I kept it inside my purse for days.

Finally, I decided to crochet it a little bowl and keep it inside.

Mossy Shawl

I crocheted this a while ago and just found it!

This shawl was one of those projects where I tried to follow a certain pattern, but then I lost track and made the rest of it up.

This wool/silk/mohair blend yarn by Noro is so mossy and earthy. It's super light and soft feel and mossy/earthy colors makes me want more of this for fall.

Forest Mandalas

After I returned from camping in the rainforest, I saw green. I went to my yarn scraps and started crocheting circles from green yarns.

These are inspired by my love for circles, mandalas and the forest.

There are so many more mandalas to be made, and I will continue to crochet more circles, maybe connect them and create a wall hanging for our kitchen. It is so wonderful when nature inspires creativity.

mossy trees on Lopez Island

I am very excited!

If you are a "tree person" like me, check out my new blog called "To the Forest!"

It combines my personal love of trees with my belief that being with and around trees can support healing and wellness.

I also have plans in the works for combining my love for crochet and fiber art and my deep love for trees and the forest.

Oh yes....and my Etsy shop is temporarily closed while I revise some of the items and offerings in my shop.

On my latest forest trip, I wore one of my favorite scarves I made out of 100% baby alpaca yarn. The scarf is perfectly soft and warm for cool mornings in the damp northwest forest.

I have always wanted to crochet an afghan. Recently, I found a pattern I love by Coats and Clark, and I am well on my way to finishing this gorgeous throw. I decided to color block the afghan with my favorite yarn, Cascade Eco-Wool, in shades of natural creams and grays. The completed project will be posted soon!

These are some felting experiments I did last week after I took a laminate felt class at Weaving Works with Faith Hagenhofer. She is an amazing, knowledgeable and energetic teacher who is so inspiring and talented. My scarf project I completed in class is the turquoise and orange scarf on silk.
The other three I made the next day at home with some fiber I have in my fiber stash. The one withe spots is nuno felted onto silk, the other two are 100% wool. On my next day off I will conduct some nuno felt experiments with some silk I dyed with onion skins and tea. I can't wait!

Super Long Ruffle Scarf

My mom sent me some yarn she wasn't using, so I decided to look up some patterns to use up the yarn. I found a Lion's Brand Pattern for a ruffle scarf I thought looked cute and easy. I decided to make it bigger and crochet with looser loops.

Well it sure did turn out MUCH larger than I can even wear!
It is not even finished yet, and it took hours to get me this far. I have it just displayed at home, because I do love the textures and sculptural effect of the ruffles. Maybe someday I will wear it, since I am really tall and could if I wrapped it around a few times. But it is super super long! I think I will finish it someday.....

I love doing custom order flowers! It is so nice to work with a variety of fibers and colors. These flowers are made from merino wool, tencel, tussah silk, alpaca, and "meriboo" (merino wool and bamboo) fibers. I love the colors! The pink and rosy colors remind me of Valentine's day :)

Cape Cod and the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Here are some pictures from the sunny day I spent exploring the Cape Cod National Seashore and Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary. It was truly a beautiful (and very cold) day! Wildlife Sanctuaries are my favorite places to explore. I have not been birding in a while, so it was nice to come out here and see all the birds native to this area. We saw two Osprey, a Great Blue Heron, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jays, several different gulls and water fowl. I forgot my binoculars, so it was hard for me to identify what I was seeing in the distance, but it was still such a lovely walk.
My 100% Natural Wool Cowl Neckwarmer kept me very warm and cozy in the harsh winter coastal wind....it is truly my favorite cowl!

Entrance to the Sanctuary. There were so many bird feeders with birds flying all around. The Nature Center was really informative about the birds and creatures of the habitat. I especially loved all the horseshoe crab shells they had on display.

I am also pretty obsessed with lichen. This picture is of some lichen with frost on it. Sparkle lichen!

Snow Fun

My mom's dog Bailey found a tangerine in the snow (heeheeheee I put it there.) At first he was interested and had to sniff it, but then was unimpressed and walked away to follow another scent. Bailey is a difficult dog to photograph because he is always moving around, so this is a rare moment to capture!

Today I went to Saftlers, the local yarn and sewing shop and bought some new 100% baby alpaca yarn from Plymouth Yarns, so today I will relax and experiment with some new designs. I would LOVE to crochet an alpaca blanket. Alpaca is so very soft against the skin...I just love the feel of it, and I just want to be surrounded by it's softness! But for now, I will eat my sub sandwich for lunch and go for a walk in the snow :)

Great Holiday Season...Now time for Vacation!

PHEW! I was a busy gal this past month! My hands were moving fast like lightening, up late crocheting every night. Now I am on vacation visiting family in good ole' New England. So snowy here, but today has been bright and sunny. I love the snow and ice in the sunshine. Seattle can seem dark in the winter, even when the sun does (rarely) shine. I have to get as much sunlight here as possible before I return to Seattle!
When we arrived, my mom had hommemade brownies and Portuguese Kale soup waiting for us...yum! This morning I woke up and she was placing warm oatmeal cookies she had just baked into a cookie container for us!

I am so grateful for the orders and super kind feedback I have received about my neck warmers! I have been busy filling orders, up late at night having fun with yarn (and a heating pad for my arms!) If you are waiting for an order...it's on it's way!

I made these Kolachky filled with poppyseed, apricot and strawberry rhubarb fillings. Yum! But by the time dessert time rolled around, I was so full, and could only fit in a small piece of delicious pecan pie! It was a meal of epic proportions, with 26 of us all together sharing a plethora of dishes. I love Thanksgiving!

Hello everyone! Last weekend we went to Port Townsend to visit Maude and Chuck, and had a relaxing and fun time, as always when we go to visit them. We had alot of laughs and walked all through all the trails and parks in town, and enjoyed windy fall weather by the water. It was the perfect sweater weather, and I wore the orange sweater my mom knit for me, which makes me feel like a human pumpkin.

We also had some delicious leek soup. The leeks were so beautiful! Maude picked several of them fresh from the garden.

Am I the only one crazy about leeks? They are my favorite vegetable by far!

Last month, my mom (who, btw, is an amazing, accomplished knitter) made a visit to Island Alpacas on Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vinyard. I am so jealous! These creatures are so adorable and, and the fiber they produce is so ridiculously soft.

I love when I make a cowl and want to sell it, but then kinda fall in love it and want to keep it for myself. Like this furry cowl I made last year. I wanted to sell it....but wait....it's so cute and soft and....i guess I just have to keep it!

It happens with almost everything I make to sell. I like it so much that sometimes it is hard to see it go, or, I decide I have to make one for myself. That is the reason I make these cowl neck warmers, because I really love the design, and wear mine all the time! I have always loved the mystery and cozy glamour of a high neckline. Maybe it began in the 70's when my mom dressed me in turtle necks? Who knew it would turn into such a fashion obsession?

I love to create with wool and natural fibers, and I desire to create accessories that people will feel fantastic wearing and having in their homes!

Growing up in New England, I wore clothes and gorgeous knitwear made with love by my mother. Now I am so proud to offer hand crocheted items because I believe in the importance of handcrafted goods in our culture. In these days of "fast fashion," it is so refreshing and fulfilling to be able to purchase and wear something beautiful that takes "slow" time and care to create, friend to friend, person to person. It is vital for me to connect this way with others.

My hand felted fantasy flowers come from a vivid dreamland full of color and whimsy, and inspire creativity and pleasure. Their designs arise organically, are hand sculpted, and no two flowers are exactly alike. Flowers are with us throughout significant events in our lives, they are treasures from the earth. They help us along our journey through life, through joy and sorrow, like beautiful friends.

Currently, I am inspired by misty mornings, spicy chai tea, any music from the 1970's, cake icing, italian plums, fantasy novels, vintage hues, walks through the rainforest, desert sunsets, poppies and peonies. I also love to spin yarn on a drop spindle, bake giant layered cakes, eat various cheeses and drink Prosecco. I love bubbles!

A bit about my favorite animal, the heron:

Grey skies....cool weather just around the corner.

The upside of the cool weather is that it is just in time to wear a new crocheted cowl in grey wool. This one is a favorite since I barely wear any colors anymore, and this fall I may end up totally blending in with the clouds. I found this faux leather jacket down in Oly at Dumpster Values. It kinda squeaks when I wear it, but whatever, it's great. I also got a new pair of grey Minnetonka hi-top moccasins yesterday. Suede fringe will always be a favorite of mine!

Beautiful Washington!

These past few weekends I explored and enjoyed two very different Washington landscapes. Last weekend was my birthday (woohoo!), and I spent it in the North Cascades, camping in the alpine forest and mountains. It was spectacular and super hot!

I brought along some yarn and wool, but I was too hot to even touch them. I did needle felt a tiny bit, and my creation had and encounter with a local resident caterpillar.

The next weekend, we went to Lopez Island, a small, beautiful island in the San Juan Islands. We enjoyed the local farmer's market, flea market, local radio station, and quiet scenic spots on the island. The weather was much cooler that the North Cascades the weekend before, and I was finally inspired to crochet some hats during the trip. My boyfriend is modeling the first one I made from leftover wool yarns:

I feel truly blessed to live in an area with such diverse natural beauty. If you haven't visited Washington State yet, I encourage you to do so!

Janice Arnold at Bellevue Arts Museum

Yesterday I saw Janice Arnold's felted window installation at the Bellevue Arts Musuem. I am already CRAZY about felt, and I fell in love with the beautiful and ethereal pieces of felt draped in the window. And I had no idea that she is an Evergreen State College Alum! Top Five TV Series to Watch While Crocheting.

I am really into watching TV series available on Netflix instant. I love being introduced to shows that I have never seen or heard of, or simply cannot watch because I don't have cable TV. One of the greatest things about crocheting is that I can create while watching fantastic TV shows, AND be inspired by costumes, drama, and scenic aspects of certain shows. I have compiled a list of the top 5 shows I love to watch while crocheting.

1. Merlin

All I have to say is.....where is season three of this feel-good family friendly version of the legendary Arthurian wizard as a teenager? I miss Merlin and the gang....bring on the magic!

2. Legend of the Seeker

How perfect are Kaylean's costumes? Gorgeous wool capes, robes, flowing epic hair and knee high leather boots have totally inspired my wardrobe. The Seeker's handcrafted boots are fantastic! Also, Zed is the best wizard ever :)

3. The Tudors

So King Henry VII was puffy megalomaniac, but the costumes, scenery, and acting are dark, sexy and opulent. I can't wait to see Season three! One of the coat pins on the guards has even inspired a new felted brooch design.

4. The Vicar of Dibley

Hilarious! This cast is outstanding and the show is full of witty British banter.

5. Arrested Development

This is my favorite TV family. The dialouge is brilliant, and I have watched each episode so many times I don't even have to look at the screen, I can just listen and laugh along.

I am obsessed with these lovelies. I am on the lookout for poppies in all colors. I especially love the pink and purple ones. These pink ones pictured here are grow around the corner from where I live in my neighbor's front yard. I first drove by them, parked my car, went inside, got the camera, and walked back to take pics of them. So beautiful! Beauty is everywhere!

My friend Brooke and I were out and about, looking at art at the Capitol Hill Artwalk, and we came across this giant beauty in an alleyway along side a building on 11th. I think it was in front of someone's front door. I don't even know what this flower is , but I cannot stop thinking about it! I am just totally in love with it, and would love to be surrounded in hundreds of them right now :)

Fantasy Flowers are Back!

When I first started creating felted flowers, I named them fantasy flowers. As time went on, I decided to drop the Fantasy description. How silly of me! Now I have returned to the original process I used to make flowers, and I have put the fantasy back into my flowers. I have desired to create flowers that evoke an organic sense of movement, energy and magic :) I think the saying goes "first thought, best thought," and in this case I do agree!

Why Use Organic Cotton?

For Spring and Summer, there is nothing better than the breathable, lightweight feel of natural cotton fabric and yarn. While researching cotton yarns for my new lightweight cowls for spring, I came across information about organic cotton and why it is so important to use. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton is "grown without the use of toxic pesticides or fertilizers. Methods such as beneficial insect releases, strip cutting of alfalfa and new weeding machinery help reduce the environmental impact of cotton crops."

According to an article in Mother Earth News, "about 25 percent of the world’s insecticide use and more than 10 percent of the world’s pesticide goes to cotton crops. In 2003, that amounted to about 55 million pounds of pesticides being sprayed on 12.8 million acres of cotton, according to the Organic Trade Association. Some of these chemicals are considered to be the most toxic chemicals in the world. The health risks of pesticide exposure include birth defects, reproductive disorders and weaker immune systems."

Wow. I am so glad that i found this out! I am really excited to support the production of organic cotton and continue to provide sustainable options that are comfortable and fashionable in my Etsy shop!

Yummy Lemon Herbal Infusion

I am a tea drinker, who sometimes dabbles with coffee now and then. Tea has been such an important part of my life, and gives me the perfect balance of feeling awake and uplifted without feeling over stimulated. I mostly love chinese green and taiwanese oolong teas, and many herbal infusions. This morning I revisited an herbal infusion that I had a long time ago in a tea shop in Port Townsend called Wild Sage. The infusion was called "Gypsy Lemon Peace" and after drinking it I felt calm, content and so uplifted. It has lemon balm, lemongrass, and fresh ginger steeped in hot water. I had some lemon verbena, and replaced the lemon balm with lemon verbena. I went to Dandelion Botanical in Ballard and bought two ounces of each, and now I enjoy this refreshing, optimistic drink whenever I need to lift my spirits!

The cowl that started it all....originally was supposed to be a sweater, but since I continuously failed at proper sleeves, I stitched up the sleeves and there was my giant cowl crocheted from 100% undyed peruvian wool. My first and favorite out of all I own :)

Rustic Icelandic Wool Laptop Cozy

I used the last of a large quantity of icelandic wool to felt myself a cozy for my new macbook. I wet felted the cozy, and to create the pocket, I used a resist, then reinforced the edges. This cozy is a great to wrap this "hi-tech" laptop with some "lo-tech" rustic icelandic wool felt, which is super strong and durable. Now my laptop won't get all scratched up in my bag. This cozy will be left plain, but this project has tons of cute rustic design potential for folks who like things a little more interesting :) Or Hobbits straight from Middle Earth.

While poking around in Velouria today, I saw the most gorgeous dresses made by designer Frocky Jack Morgan. If I ever have a big love party (not exactly a wedding) I will wear one of these dresses. This dress is made from wool and I love it like a crazy lady loves headbands.
